13th March 1982

Liverpool retained the League Cup at Wembley quite comfortably when they beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-1. Two goals from Ronnie Whelan and another from Ian Rush ensured that Liverpool became the first team to retain the League Cup since Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest, after they beat Liverpool then Southampton in 1978 and 1979.

Although Spurs went ahead early on through Steve Archibald’s goal in the 11th minute and even though Liverpool didn’t equalise until late on with Ronnie Whelan’s 87th minute strike, the Liverpool side of that era had a feel of “we will come back and win” about them. Liverpool had dominated the game throughout so Whelan’s equaliser was well deserved to say the least.

Whelan’s equaliser took the game into extra-time, where another Whelan Wembley special in the 111th minute and a regulation Ian Rush finish in the 119th minute saw Liverpool  lift the League Cup, known as at that time as the Milk Cup.

Liverpool’s starting line-up on the day was:

Bruce Grobbelaar, Phil Neal, Phil Thompson, Mark Lawrenson, Alan Kennedy, Graeme Souness, Terry McDermott, Sammy Lee, Ronnie Whelan, Kenny Dalglish, Ian Rush, with David Johnson coming on as a substitute for Terry McDermott.
