Jamie Carragher-A True Legend

Thanks for the memories Carra. Really a true Reds legend. I remember being in the Kop against Aston Villa back in 1997 when we won 3-0 and the young, central midfielder Carragher bulleted a header in the Kop net. We were soon to find out though that scoring goals was not a Carra speciality (well, not in the opponents goal anyway…only joking!!). Of course his best work for Liverpool was as a centre-back.

He did play a lot at left-back under Gerard Houllier and he did get quite a bit of stick back then as I recall. Not Christian Poulsen-esque or early days Lucas Leiva, but he had his fair share of crtitcs as he was not the best left-back at coming forward. Having said that, defensively at left-back he was brilliant.

It was of course at centre-back where he excelled and went on to become of the best centre-backs in Europe. His performance in Istanbul was real Roy Of The Rovers stuff. Even though AC Milan attacked with real purpose in extra-time we fans had that “its OK, Carra’s at the back, he will sort it” attitude.

This is how the BBC reported Carra’s last game in a Reds shirt….although as Carra said in his post match interview, “his last competitive match”. So, we will probably see him again in Steven Gerrard’s testimonial.
